About Chernihiv regionEstablished: October 15, 1932 Total area: 31.900 sq km, 5.3% of the total territory of Ukraine Distance from Chernihiv to Kyiv: by rails – 209 km (130 miles), by road – 141 km (89 miles) Geography: the region is located in Polissya and forest-steppe zones of the Dnieper lowland. Its territory is occupied by more than 3.3 thousand watercourses (water surface area is more than 0.5 hectares) and 2.7 thousand small reservoirs (water surface area is 0.5 ha). 1570 rivers run through the region, including small - 1560. The biggest rivers are Dnipro, Desna, Oster, Snov, Sozh, Sudost, Supoi, Udai and Trubizh. The total length of the river network is 8.3 thousand km. Boundaries: the region borders on the Sumy region, the Kyiv region, the Poltava region, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Belarus. Administrative territorial divisions: cities of regional subordination – 4: Chernihiv, Nizhyn, Pryluky, Novhorod-Siverskyi cities of raion subordination – 12 urban-type settlements – 29 villages – 1481 raions (districts) – 22: Bakhmatskyi, Bobrovytskyi, Borznianskyi, Varvynskyi, Gorodnianskyi, Ichnianskyi, Kozeletskyi, Koropskyi, Koriukivskyi, Kulykivskyi, Menskyi, Nizhynskyi, Novhorod-Siverskyi, Nosivskyi, Prylutskyi, Ripkynskyi, Semenivskyi, Sosnytskyi, Sribnianskyi, Talalaivskyi, Chernihivskyi, Shchorskyi The current estimated population of the region is 1045.0 thousand people (as of 01.01.2016).
